The New V5 Chip from 23andMe

Every few years 23andMe changes their chip, and with it many of the SNPs that they sequence. Whenever this happens we gain access to a host of new and potentially useful SNPs. However we also sometimes lose access to useful SNPs that are part of our reports. In the the case of the new V5 chip, based on comparisons we’ve run from a few reference genomes that members of our community have generously given us permission to look at, there are several hundred SNPs that we look for on our reports (of the more than 1,600 that we look for) that will no longer be available. This is unfortunate, however there are alternatives and research has already begun to see how many of the new SNPs added in V5 we can bring to our reports. Below you can see a collection of SNPs that we believe may no longer be available in 23andMe’s V5 chip, and whether or not they are available through AncestryDNA. We must stress that this list is not definitive and is not based on any special access we have to either 23andMe or AncestryDNA

As you can see, a good alternative to 23andMe’s service is Ancestry DNA. Normal pricing for Ancestry DNA is only $99 and has been on sale for as low as $69. Their current v2 chip will at this time give you a more complete Variant Report than 23andMe’s V5 chip. Additionally there are a wide range of genetic apps and services online that are also compatible with Ancestry DNA’s format, including ours.

    So Sterling, I too am getting questions. All the one’s that 23 does NOT do, and some that Ancestry does NOT do, are genes YOU would like to have and Ancestry is closer to having what you would like to have. Is that correct interpretation?
