There are some studies that indicate that folic acid may increase or cause tumour growth. Is it safe to give methylfolate to someone with cancer? This person is homozygous for MTHFR C667T.
My understanding is that the problem is with unmetabolized folic acid not the methylated form. Any thoughts on this?

Hi Theresa, It depends on ones enzyme SNP status of DHFR, MTHFD1 and MTHFR among a few others… Generally though, if she has cancer, folic acid may be detrimental. A small amount is likely OK (<400 mags), but folic acid can “block” folate receptors if DHFR has multiple homozygous or many heterozygous allele. Its more complicated than 3 enzymes, but safer is MTHF rather than folic acid.
